Planting bougainvillea

When planting bougainvillea, it is vital to choose the right size of planting pot. If you are planting a home-grown plant rather than a purchased one, choose a container of the right size for the size of the root. The very first container you plant in should be small. When the plant is young, it will develop roots first and foremost, and will use its energy for growing roots until they are well woven into the container. This will result in little or no growth above the topsoil of the bougainvillea.

Don’t place the plant pot directly on soil, because if you never move the plant, the roots can grow into the soil in a summer and if you lift the pot, the roots will be damaged.

I recommend that you do not use a plant saucer under your bougainvillea pot. But if you insist, water the plant without the saucer, wait for the excess water to run out of the bottom of the pot, and only then put it back on the saucer. Remove the saucer from under the pot during rainy periods, if the bougainvillea stands in water, its roots will be damaged.

Always choose a pot with drainage holes that matches the size of the bougainvillea’s root system for planting.

In addition to the above, consider the following tips:

  • never use a planting pot without holes in the bottom to drain excess water. Nor do I recommend keeping the plant pot in a clay pot. If you overwater the plant, excess water will stand at the bottom of the pot. I know the pot may look decorative, but your plant wants to live.
  • avoid using black containers if you keep your bougainvillea in direct sunlight.
  • the container you plant it in should be neither too big nor too small. It should be large enough to comfortably accommodate the root while leaving some room for growth. Remember, in the sun, soil in smaller containers dries out faster, so you’ll need to water more often than plants with larger soil quantities.
  • plastic or clay pots? The eternal debate. Either is good, but if you plant in clay pots, be aware that the weight will make it more difficult to move the plant, especially if you more plants and larger specimens. Another advantage of plastic is that it retains soil moisture longer than clay. Clay is aerated, plastic is not, so you need to water your plants in clay pots more often. Clay, on the other hand, is often more beautiful, more ornamental and, because of its naturalness, looks better in a Mediterranean garden. It doesn’t matter to the plant which you choose. Just make sure you follow the advice above.
