The bougainvillea is a woody climber native to South America and widespread in tropical and subtropical areas. The climate in our country is increasingly shifting towards a Mediterranean climate due to global warming. It is no wonder that this plant of a thousand faces, unknown to us for far too long, is nowadays gaining ground and, along with the oleander, is becoming the dominant plant in the garden of Mediterranean ornamental plant lovers.

Our collection of over 300 varieties is constantly being added to. All photos are strictly of our own plants. The photos in the webshop are of the mother plants, so we do not sell the plants shown in the photos.

If you cannot find the bougainvillea species you are looking for, please check back from time to time as our collection is constantly being updated. And if you want a mutation that is not in stock, click on the “notification” button and we will email you as soon as it is available.

The pricing of our plants is mainly influenced by three factors: the rarity of the variety, its growth rate, and its ability to be propagated.

In other words, rare, slow-growing mutations (which produce less propagating material over time) with weaker propagation tendencies are priced higher, while more common, fast-growing, and easily propagated varieties are available at lower prices.

We would also like to thank Zoltán Csorba, a bougainvillea collector, who has kindly agreed to share his own research findings in the variety descriptions.

The bougainvillea’s popularity in our country is due to its colourful bracts and drought tolerance. It is widespread in South Asia, the Mediterranean, Africa, Australia, and the Pacific Islands. In warmer, sunnier tropical, subtropical, and Mediterranean climates, it is a popular ornamental plant in gardens and public spaces. In more temperate, warmer, or even cooler climates, it is often grown as a container plant or in greenhouses.

In Europe, however, only the more familiar, basic bougainvillea varieties are still to be found. There are several reasons for this. The basic varieties are easier to propagate than the others and more resistant than most of the newer mutations. Since mass production is based on economical propagation, sales by larger nurseries are limited to varieties that are easy and quick to propagate. In addition, sourcing them from outside the European Union is a cumbersome and costly process due to the protection of the common internal market of EU Member States and the strict phytosanitary standards in force.

Despite this, our webshop aims to locate, import and propagate rare, eye-catching bougainvillea varieties, making them available to Mediterranean plant lovers and collectors in the European Union.
