Where to buy bougainvillea?

Thanks to the fact that the weather in our country has become more and more Mediterranean in recent decades, tropical exotic and Mediterranean ornamental plants are becoming more and more common in increasingly beautiful flower gardens. Desert roses, plumeria, oleander, to name but a few of the most popular and well-loved. In the last few years, the basic varieties of bougainvillea have started to appear, first in the larger Hungarian nurseries and then in supermarkets.

When it comes to buying bougainvillea, everyone has different priorities. Below we try to answer the question of who should buy bougainvillea and where.

For those who are new to the plant, there are understandable reasons why they may prefer to choose the more affordable, less delicate, basic varieties that are easy and safe to keep. These can be found in garden centres and DIY stores from mid-April, and even some foreign supermarket chains are now luring their spring customers with low-priced Vera Deep Purple bougainvillea, usually advertised as tree-form bougainvillea, but of course in no way connected to true tree-form bougainvillea. By the way, all bougainvillea can be breeding bougainvillea if they are bred as such. These are very good plants for practising on, and even if they don’t survive, it’s not the end of the world, as they are available at a good price. You may feel sorry if they die, but the money thrown away is not a significant amount. You will not find any other mutations in the above places, apart from a few basic species. The reason for this is very simple. European propagation nurseries have set up mass production with these varieties. These are varieties that are already widespread in Europe, are relatively easy and economical to propagate in huge quantities of hundreds of thousands, and are stable and hardy.

Those who have any knowledge or have already grown bougainvillea most certainly prefer to buy from nurseries that specialise in Mediterranean ornamental plants. They are also more likely to browse the internet hunting down varieties that are not available in the more well-known nurseries. There are a few online shops in Hungary, but they have the disadvantage of being resellers rather than growers, so they source their plants from abroad. Their plants are often subjected to harsh conditions during transport by lorry, and sometimes, unfortunately, you can realise this when you unpack them at home. The widest range is mainly offered by foreign online shops, often outside the EU, where the biggest risk is also transport, as you never know in what condition the beautiful plants you see in the photos on the online shop will arrive. In addition, if you order from a country outside the EU, you have to obtain a phytosanitary certificate and at the border you have to expect a delay of several days as phytosanitary checks are carried out. The phytosanitary inspection is not free and the customs duty on the purchase price of the product both have to be borne by the purchaser. It is basically a question of luck whether the bougainvillea we have ordered will survive.

We haven’t yet mentioned collectors. Those who have been collecting the most varied and rare varieties of bougainvillea for a long time have, in addition to exchanges with other domestic owners, also managed to survive orders from abroad. They already have a good proportion of the varieties available in the country and are not afraid to buy from the farthest corners of the world. However, their lives have been seriously hampered by the new European Union plant health regulation of 2019 (COMMISSION REGULATION (EU) 2019/2072). In addition to the high delivery charges, the procurement process has to comply with extremely strict phytosanitary requirements, as I mentioned in the paragraph above. When buying bougainvillea from the Far East, you should expect a minimum delivery time of 5-6 days, which can be extended to 14-21 days by the phytosanitary checks and customs clearance at the border. The more delicate, rarer varieties of bougainvillea are unlikely to survive this delivery time. And no guarantees can be given for dead plants, neither by the seller nor by customs. All costs and risks are borne by the buyer.

As an artisanal nursery based in Hungary, we are dedicated exclusively to growing, propagating and selling bougainvillea mutations. Our purchasing system is overseen by the National Food Chain Safety Office (NÉBIH). Our mother plants and propagations are supervised by a plant protection expert, a plant protection specialist and a plant doctor, assigned by NÉBIH. Our bougainvillea are delivered with a plant passport. The plant passport is the official label required for the transport of plants within the European Union, certifying that the plants bearing it meet the health requirements of all EU plants. In addition to the bougainvillea varieties known in Hungary, our collection also includes the rarest tropical mutations. The procurement of mother plants and propagation from them is continuous. We propagate locally and do not sell to other traders. All our Bougainvillea for sale have strong roots, are healthy and resistant to disease. Plants are delivered by GLS, MPL, or other local couriers. Our plants can be delivered to any place in Hungary within one day of order. Need more reasons to buy?
